How to create a sustainable skincare routine

Creating a sustainable skincare routine is an exciting journey towards healthy skin and a happier planet. Developing a sustainable routine involves making small changes, that over time create big differences. Here are some tips on how to make your skincare routine more sustainable:

1. Simplify your routine

Opt for a minimalistic approach and focus on only what your skin needs. Having fewer products helps to reduce waste and simplify your routine. Identify the core steps for your skin type. This could be a cleanser, moisturiser and sun protection.

2. Choose natural and organic products

Try and look for skincare products made with natural, organic and sustainable ingredients. Avoid products that contain unnatural and harmful ingredients. Read product labels to help you identify any unnecessary or unnatural ingredients.

3. Opt for sustainable brands

Research and choose brands that align with sustainable values. Look for companies that use eco-friendly packaging and have certifications like organic, cruelty-free or fair trade. This helps to identify brands with ethical practices and who prioritise sustainability in their products.

4. Reduce, reuse and recycle containers

Reduce, reuse, recycle

Rather than throwing your containers away, see if you could repurpose them for DIY projects or good storage options. Try to opt for products in recyclable or biodegradable packaging. Rinse containers thoroughly and check they can be recycled before popping them into the recycling.

5. Reduce the amount of water you use

Be mindful of water usage during your skincare routine. Try turing off the tap when you're not using it and reduce the amount of water you use when rinsing.

6. Avoid single-use products

Minimise the use of single-use products like face wipes or cotton pads. Try and opt for reusable alternatives such as flannels or reusable cotton pads. When they’re used, pop them in the wash and reuse them.

Building a sustainable skincare routine can take time so don’t feel like you need to rush right away. A good place to start is to finish your products and then when researching for new ones, try to opt for a more sustainable option. Over time you’ll transition to a more sustainable skincare routine. Share your choices and favourite products with others and by adopting these practices, you can enjoy a skincare routine that is beneficial for your skin and the environment!
